Overview

Comments let you attach notes directly to conversations in Coval — either to a specific message or to the conversation as a whole. They’re available in both the Deep Dive view and during Human Review, so your team can surface issues, provide context, and collaborate without leaving the platform. There are two types of comments:
TypeScopeHow to add
Message-levelPinned to a specific transcript messageSelect text in the message, then click the comment button
Conversation-levelAttached to the entire conversationUse the comment sidebar without selecting a specific message

Adding a Message-Level Comment

Message-level comments let you highlight specific text in a transcript and attach a note to it.
1

Open a conversation

Navigate to a conversation via the Runs, Monitoring, or Human Review pages.
2

Select text in a message

Click and drag over the transcript text you want to annotate. A toolbar appears above your selection.
3

Click the comment button

Click the comment icon in the toolbar. A pending comment preview appears inline showing your selected text.
4

Type your comment and submit

Enter your comment in the input field. Press Enter or click Submit to save it.
Once saved, a highlight appears on the annotated text. Comments are shown in the comment sidebar on the right side of the conversation viewer.

Adding a Conversation-Level Comment

To attach a note to the whole conversation rather than a specific message:
  1. Open the comment sidebar using the comment toggle button in the toolbar.
  2. Click Add comment at the conversation level (not associated with any highlighted text).
  3. Type your note and submit.
Conversation-level comments appear at the top of the sidebar, above any message-level annotations.

Using the Comment Sidebar

The comment sidebar groups comments by the message they’re anchored to. You can:
  • Click a comment card to highlight the corresponding text in the transcript
  • Click highlighted text in the transcript to jump to and highlight the related comment card in the sidebar
  • Reply to a comment to start a thread
  • Delete a comment using the hover actions (icon buttons visible on hover)
The sidebar is toggled open/closed using the comment button in the conversation toolbar.

Comments in Human Review

Comments are fully supported during Human Review assignments. Reviewers can annotate specific messages or leave conversation-level notes alongside their metric assessments. To enable the comment sidebar while reviewing:
  1. Open an assignment from the Human Review page.
  2. Click the comment toggle button in the assignment toolbar.
  3. Select text to add a message-level comment, or add a conversation-level comment from the sidebar.
Comments left during review are visible to other team members who have access to the conversation.

Keyboard Tips

You can navigate between conversations while preserving your review context:
  • h / l (or a / d, or / ) — move between neighboring conversations
  • j / k — move through rows in the runs/monitoring table
For the full keyboard reference, see the Keyboard Navigation guide.
